Chris’ Top 10 Things to Do on the Sunshine Coast

July 22, 2026

Beaches, coffee, mountains, margaritas and plenty of pats for Biscuit

People often ask me what makes the Sunshine Coast such a great place to live. Yes, we have beautiful beaches, warm weather and some pretty special scenery—but for me, it is the lifestyle and the simple things that make it home.

This isn’t a polished tourist itinerary or a list of places you need to rush around ticking off. It is simply my top 10 things to do on the Sunshine Coast, through the eyes of someone lucky enough to live, work and play here.

1. Wake Up Where the Sun Is Usually Shining

There is something special about waking up on the Sunshine Coast, opening the curtains and seeing blue sky outside.

Even on a busy workday, the sunshine seems to put you in a better mood. You can hear the birds, smell the ocean air and start the morning knowing the beach is only a few minutes away.

Some mornings are made for getting up early and making the most of the day. Other mornings are made for a slow coffee while deciding exactly how little you plan to accomplish!

Either way, waking up on the Sunshine Coast is a pretty good start.

2. Surf or Swim at the Beach

You can’t have a Sunshine Coast top 10 without starting with the beach.

Whether it is catching a few waves, going for an ocean swim or simply standing in the water and cooling down, the beach has a way of resetting everything.

You don’t need to be a professional surfer. Some days the waves are great, some days they are ordinary, and some days it is enough just to paddle out and enjoy being in the ocean.

For swimming, always choose a patrolled beach and stay between the red and yellow flags. The Sunshine Coast has a long stretch of coastline, with everything from busy family beaches to quieter little bays.

3. Find a Great Coffee

Coffee isn’t just a drink on the Sunshine Coast—it is practically part of the lifestyle.

There is nothing better than finishing a morning walk or swim and sitting down with a good coffee. We are spoilt for choice, with little espresso bars, beachfront cafés, hidden local favourites and plenty of places where you can sit outside with the dog.

The Sunshine Coast has developed a strong café and coffee culture, particularly around its beachside communities.

My perfect combination is simple: good coffee, ocean views, friendly people and nowhere I need to rush off to.

4. Walk Along the Foreshore

One of my favourite things about the Sunshine Coast is how easy it is to get outside and start walking.

You can follow the foreshore, wander along the coastal pathways, stop at a lookout or find a seat and watch the waves roll in. Some walks are quick. Others accidentally turn into a couple of hours once you keep following the coastline.

The coastal paths are perfect for walking, running, catching up with friends or clearing your head before or after work. The region has numerous coastal routes linking beaches, headlands, cafés and breakfast spots.

5. Take Biscuit for a Beach Walk—and Give Her Plenty of Pats

Biscuit is our beautiful golden retriever, and taking her out for a walk is always one of the best parts of the day.

For Biscuit, every walk is an adventure. There are smells to investigate, people to meet and pats to collect. Lots and lots of pats.

She has never met a stranger—only a potential new best friend who hasn’t patted her yet.

A beach or foreshore walk with Biscuit reminds you that happiness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it is simply fresh air, a wagging tail and a dog who thinks every day on the Sunshine Coast is the greatest day of her life.

6. Climb a Mountain

When I feel like earning my breakfast—or trying to convince myself I am getting fit—I love climbing one of our local mountains.

Mount Coolum is one of the best-known options. The summit walk is approximately 1.6 kilometres return, is rated Grade 4 and rewards you with views across the coastline and hinterland. It is steep in sections, so bring water, wear suitable shoes and tackle it during daylight and dry conditions.

There are also great walks around the Glass House Mountains, including the Mount Ngungun summit track.

The climb might make you question some of your life decisions halfway up, but the view from the top normally makes it worthwhile.

7. Enjoy Waterfront Dining—and Order a Margarita

The Sunshine Coast does relaxed waterfront dining exceptionally well.

There is something about sitting beside the water that makes lunch taste better, the afternoon feel longer and ordering another drink seem like a perfectly sensible decision.

Fresh seafood, good company and an ocean or river view are hard to beat. The Coast offers everything from casual fish and chips beside the water to beachfront restaurants, surf clubs and special-occasion dining.

And when the sun starts to go down, you can’t go too far wrong with a cold margarita.

Preferably salt on the rim.

8. Catch Up with Friends

The best places are not just about scenery—they are about the people you share them with.

Catching up with friends for a coffee, a walk, lunch, a barbecue or a few drinks is one of the things I value most about living here.

The Sunshine Coast lifestyle makes it easy to keep things casual. You don’t always need a big plan. Send a message, meet near the beach and see where the day takes you.

Good friends, a few laughs and a beautiful setting—that is a pretty successful afternoon in my eyes.

9. Spend a Day at Australia Zoo

Australia Zoo is one of those places locals sometimes forget is right on our doorstep.

It is located at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast and has grown from the original Beerwah Reptile Park into an internationally recognised wildlife attraction with a strong focus on conservation and animal experiences.

It is a great day out for visiting friends, families or anyone who wants to experience one of Queensland’s most famous attractions.

Even if you have been before, there is always something different to see—and you are never too old to enjoy watching a crocodile launch itself out of the water.

10. Go on a Date with My Partner

Last, but definitely not least, is going out on a date with my partner.

It might be dinner overlooking the water, a walk along the beach, a relaxed lunch, a movie or simply finding somewhere new for a drink. It doesn’t have to be extravagant.

When life and business get busy, setting aside time to enjoy each other’s company matters.

The Sunshine Coast gives us plenty of beautiful backdrops, but the most important part is the person sitting across the table.

Although a good margarita certainly doesn’t hurt.

Why I Love Calling the Sunshine Coast Home

My favourite Sunshine Coast experiences aren’t necessarily the biggest or most expensive.

They are the everyday moments: an early surf, coffee after a walk, Biscuit collecting pats, laughing with friends, climbing a mountain, sharing a meal beside the water or heading out for a date with my partner.

That is what the Sunshine Coast lifestyle means to me.

It offers the freedom to work hard, enjoy the outdoors, spend time with the people you care about and occasionally sit beside the water with a margarita in your hand.

And honestly, that is a pretty good way to live.
